Project Description

Queen of the Missions, Santa Barbara, CA

The Old Mission Santa Barbara also known as the Queen of the Missions was founded by the Franciscan Friar Fermín de Lasuén on the Feast of St. Barbara, December 4th, 1786. Although there are more than 2,000 people buried at the Mission there are only 50 grave stones. One of the missing grave stones belongs to Maria Charlotte De La Ascencion (Peggy Stewart). Little Peggy Stewart was born in Tahiti to George Stewart (from HMS Bounty) and his Tahitian wife. According to Sir Basil Thompson, ‘little Peggy was the first half-caste born in Tahiti” and she was the first white female to reside in Santa Barbara County.
